The Urinary PKU Test requires only a random, spot urine specimen taken anytime during the day. The uPAA levels are normalized to urine creatinine.
This test may have value monitoring PKU patients consuming a phenylalanine-restricted diet recommended for life to prevent intellectual disability and neurologic / psychologic problems.
Untreated PKU children often give off a mousy body and urine odor from PAA which is a degradation product of phenylalanine.
NCL tested random urine specimens on 32 subjects and found the mean + - standard deviation of uPAA = 4.93 + - 3.2 micromol PAA / mmol creatinine.
Previous reported values in normal adults showed uPAA = 4.16 + - 0.91 micromol / mmol creatinine (Am J Clin Nutr 2003; 77(4): 912-918) and for PKU individuals uPAA = 55.6 + - 87.3 micromol / mmol creatinine (Eur J Pediatr 1990; 149(Suppl. 1): 17-24).
Levels of uPAA have also been useful in the study of various kinds of mental illnesses such as depression (J Psychiatry Neurosci 1994; 19(4): 282-288).
